The opportunity
Gap A is the first of three segments covering the last 30 miles of two-lane road between Hampton Roads and Richmond. The project spans 10.7 miles of new lane construction, bridge work, drainage, and heavy earthwork along a complex interstate corridor with multiple access points and heavy traffic.
The team at Shirley uses Iron Sheepdog daily, primarily for two purposes: safety and cost management. On the safety side, the platform serves as a direct communication tool with drivers, including sending out heat safety reminders to communicate when trucks need to be rerouted due to traffic or operational changes. The team can blast a message to all drivers or pinpoint specific trucks individually to minimize downtime.
On the cost side, the team monitors live load cycle data throughout the day, tracking arrival times, travel times, and load counts across sites. This allows them to spot inefficiencies in real time, intervene when loads start to gap, and reconcile quantities and hours at the end of each day so there are no surprises when the weekly invoice arrives.
The project typically runs 10-22 dirt trucks and 15-22 crushed concrete trucks on any given day, managed through two brokers, Andre Tyree Trucking and Predestined Hauling, with whom the team maintains constant communication through the platform.
