High-Touch, High-Tech: How Iron Sheepdog is Digitizing Dump Truck Hauling

Mike Van Sickel, CEO
Iron Sheepdog has become a platform that replaces antiquated paper-based logistics with a "high-touch, high-tech" solution for the construction industry. This interview with Co-Founder and CEO Mike Van Sickel highlights the unique "bottom-up" approach to technology, focusing on how empowering brokers and haulers can solve massive administrative burdens and modernize heavy civil construction.
"If necessity is the mother of invention, then curiosity is its father." - Rupal Bhadu

Iron Sheepdog was born out of necessity rather than a desire to start a software firm. While working as an executive for a large multinational contractor, I realized that while most aspects of construction were digitized, trucking logistics remained antiquated, relying on paper tickets and phone calls.

I enjoyed a recent conversation with Mayur Mistry on his AEC Tech Journeys podcast, which had me reflecting on the core problems we aimed to solve at Iron Sheepdog:

  • Inefficient Data Collection: Reconciling paper tickets manually often took weeks.
  • Administrative Burden: Small third-party haulers often refused more work because the paperwork and weekly invoicing were too overwhelming.
  • Transparency and Reliability: Moving toward better visibility into costs and logistics.

In addition, we discussed our approach to technology adoption and how we’ve found success.

As the quote above implies, necessity and curiosity helped us develop an app and platform that dump truck brokers and drivers actually wanted to use to ensure better data quality.
